Our 2026 Grant Recipient

Professional barriers can force talented people to choose between staying stuck and creating their own opportunity.

After more than 12 years as a school counselor and administrator, Rheon Gibson faced a major career barrier. Following the filing of a federal discrimination lawsuit against his former school district in 2023, his opportunities became very limited.

Despite his experience, leadership ability, and qualifications, Rheon was left with two choices: accept an entry-level role that did not reflect his capabilities or build a new path for himself.

He chose entrepreneurship.

Turning his passion for Southern-style barbecue into a business, Rheon opened Back At It BBQ in his hometown of DeKalb, Illinois. Just three weeks after its grand opening, Back At It BBQ earned third place in NIU’s “50 Men Who Cook” competition.

Rheon’s journey is about more than barbecue. It is about overcoming barriers, creating opportunity when doors are closed, and showing future generations that a setback does not have to determine your future.

Sometimes, when you are denied a seat at the table, you build your own.

Who We Are

We are Dawn and Darrell—two ordinary people who have seen something extraordinary up close. Our journey started with one small farm store, grew into two, and eventually led us to sell them. But the most important thing we built wasn’t a business—it was perspective.

Day after day, we met people who were wildly capable, deeply talented, and full of ideas, yet consistently overlooked. People whose potential far exceeded what a résumé could ever capture. People held back by a label, a past mistake, a gap in employment, a diagnosis, or a story someone else wrote for them.

We learned quickly that talent is everywhere—opportunity is not. Too often, people with barriers are undersold, underestimated, and told to “be realistic” instead of being encouraged to dream bigger. We believe that is not just wrong—it’s wasteful.

This is why we pivoted. Our mission is to help people reclaim their belief in what’s possible. We provide multiple small business grants each year, paired with personalized coaching and real-world support, so ideas don’t stay stuck in notebooks or conversations—they turn into action.

We don’t believe your past defines your future. We believe your ambition, grit, and creativity do. Our work exists to give people permission—and support—to dream big and build boldly.
